Steve Barnes, commercial and membership director at the Food & Drink Federation (FDF), will take on the new role as director general of GroceryAid in September 2016.
Barnes replaces Gillian Barker who has been director general for the past 14 years and who will be retiring at the end of November 2016.
Barnes started his career in location planning, evaluating sites for Safeway, Presto and Lo-Cost stores. He spent 17 years at IGD think-tank, with 12 of those as business director and the last four years as commercial and membership director.
Barnes said: “While I’m disappointed to be leaving FDF, this is a hugely exciting role to take on in the grocery arena. I am privileged and humbled to inherit a fantastic team in a supportive industry to serve the beneficiaries of GroceryAid.
“The assistance given from the industry to those in need is inspiring and I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to drive even greater awareness of the charity.”
