Tesco continued the Christmas fightback of the big four supermarkets against the limited range discounters, posting UK like-for-like sales growth of 1.3% during the six weeks to January 9.

Britain’s biggest retailer revealed group like-for-like sales growth of 2.1% and customer transactions up 3.4% with volumes up by 3.5%.

International like-for-like sales rose by 4.1% during the period.

Tesco chief executive Dave Lewis said: "Our Christmas performance was strong, benefiting from lower prices on an outstanding range of products. Our customer service improved materially and our colleagues went the extra mile.

‘Buying more of what they needed’

“Put simply, we put customers at the heart of everything we did and they responded by buying more of what they needed at Tesco.”

Also revealing third-quarter results for the 13 weeks to November 28, Tesco announced group like-for-like sales down by 0.5% and a fall in UK like-for-like sales of 1.5%. The results were said to reflect the impact of “lapping unsustainable couponing in prior year”.

International like-for-like sales grew by 2.9% during the quarter.

International sales

“International sales have also continued to strengthen, driven once again by improvements across the offer,” said Coupe. “We continued our strong positive sales momentum in both Europe and Asia, with our Thai business reaching its highest ever market share.”

The retailer was “making good progress and trading in line with profit expectations for the full year”, he claimed.
