Morrisons was one of four firms forced to issue food safety recalls recently, after detecting Listeria monocytogenes in its Savers Cooked Ham.

The supermarket recalled 200g pack sizes of the product on September 4. The recall affects products with the ‘use by’ date of September 11.

Two other retailers that issued product recently were Sainsbury and Waitrose.

Sainsbury recalled its Sainsbury’s Basics Unsweetened UHT Soya Drink yesterday (September 8), after a manufacturing fault was said to have caused curdling in some products.

Caused curdling

The recall affects the 1 litre pack size with the ‘best before’ date of May 9 2016.

Waitrose recalled its Asian Fusion Rice Noodles, due to the presence of undeclared egg and wheat. “This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to egg and/ or wheat (gluten),” said the retailer.

The recall affected noodles with a pack size of 300g and a ‘use by’ datye of September 6 2015.

Also recalled recently were Yu! Yoghurt coated Granola & Mango Mini Clusters and Yu! Yoghurt Coated Granola & Strawberry Mini Clusters, again due to the undeclared presence of gluten.

Possible health risk

A possible health risk for anyone with an intolerance to gluten, the recall affects all ‘best before’ date codes.

Meanwhile, preventing product recalls, that could cost many millions of pounds, will be one the subjects under consideration at the Food Manufacture Group’s one-day food safety conference at the Lowry, Manchester on September 29.

The conference will be divided into four sessions: Minimising contamination in raw materials and ingredients; Managing safety hazards and risks in processing, distribution and sale; Delivering products that are safe throughout their shelf-life; and Reassuring consumers about the safety of what they eat.

Book your place at our conference, Safer food and drink – from the harvest to the home, here.

The conference will be chaired by Professor Colin Dennis, the recently appointed 76th president of the US Institute of Food Technologists.
