The Food and Drink Federation (FDF) has launched a gluten-free labelling guide for food manufacturers.

The guide, which is called ‘Gluten Labelling Best Practice: How to label pre-packaged foods which include cereals containing gluten’, has been developed by the FDF in conjunction with Coeliac UK, Anaphylaxis Campaign and the British Retail Consortium.

Challenges

Examples of the usual labelling situations, as well as more challenging labelling situations, such as the labelling of gluten-containing foods, are covered.

Claims for gluten-free foods are also covered in the guide, according to FDF director of regulation, science and health Barbara Gallani.

Legal issues

“As consumers are increasingly seeking clear information about various allergenic ingredients within the foods they purchase, it is important that food manufacturers provide labels that are legally compliant and make it easier for consumers to understand allergen information,” Gallani says.
