UK Bakery ingredients firm International Taste Solutions is expanding its business into Italy, Spain and Portugal, following success in Ireland and the Netherlands, the firm’s md Mike Bagshaw said.

More than 39Mt of bread is consumed across Europe each year, with countries such as Spain and Italy consuming 37kg/head and 52kg/head a year respectively, according to a recent International Association of Plant Bakeries (AIBI) Bread Market Report.

“Expanding to these countries gives us the opportunity to reach a broader market with our flavour and texture solutions,”​ Bagshaw remarked.

Consumers in the UK eat around 52kg of bread each a year and the sector has an annual turnover of £3.4bn, making it the second largest sector in the UK’s food industry, according to AIBI.
