The research, which was commissioned by the ingredients manufacturer Clasado and carried out at the university’s department of psychiatry, showed that intake of the company’s prebiotic Bimuno lowered the waking cortisol response in 45 subjects.
It also altered their emotional bias and increased their attention and vigilance, researchers claimed.
Results from the study were compared with those in subjects who took fructooligosaccharide and a placebo, researchers said.
“The results of the study suggest that Bimuno may have an anxiolytic effect and reduce stress reactivity in healthy subjects,” they added.
“The study had also demonstrated that manipulation of gut microbiota with Bimuno may alter hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis reactivity and processing.”
