Whisky
Scottish whisky was in a “special position” in the independence debate, claimed David Frost, SWA ceo.
The Scottish whisky industry employs 35,000 people and sustains economic activity in rural and remote areas, he added.
“At the UK level, we are fortunate to have - on the whole - certainty in our domestic business environment,” he said. “Monetary and fiscal policy is predictably managed.”
“We benefit from the fact that our domestic market is the sixth biggest economy in the world, large enough to support broad and balanced growth and provide a pool of relevant skills.”
However, there were concerns over what currency an independent Scotland would use, which could affect exports, supply chain management, pricing and competitiveness.
Scotch whisky relied on government support in brokering overseas deals, he pointed out.
“Both the UK and Scottish Governments have been supportive of us and there will be risks if this support is not maintained,” added Frost.
