Potato Pete
Potato Pete was also honoured in the BNF’s commemorative post cards. Potatoes were easy to grow in the British climate, cheap to buy and provided a valuable source of vitamin C in the absence of fruit.
The cartoon character Potato Pete became the focus of a campaign to get people – particularly children – to eat more vegetables.
Potato Pete even had his own song sung by Betty Driver – who later rose to TV stardom as Betty Williams in TV’s longest running soap Coronation Street.
