Waste not, want not
The Waste not, want not campaign implored Britons not to waste the precious food grown at home or imported at the risk of so many merchant seamen’s lives.
The Ministry of Food used leaflets, radio programmes and community meetings to drive home the message about preserving food and minimising waste. Even as early as 1940, wasting food had become a criminal offence.
