Dig for victory
The Dig for victory campaign was launched in 1940 by the Ministry of Food to combat food shortages by encouraging embattled Britons to plant vegetables in their gardens, allotments and on public land.
Before the war Britain imported about 75% of its food. But, by the war’s end in 1945, three-quarters of our food was produced at home, thanks to the Dig for victory campaign and British farmers – aided by the Women’s Land Army.
