Galen and George Weston
Galen and George Weston scooped top spot in this year’s Sunday Times Rich List of people who have made their fortune from food and drink.
Galen and nephew George saw their wealth grow by £650M to £7.3bn in the past year, making them the richest food and drink personalities and the 11th wealthiest in the UK.
George Weston runs Associated British Foods (ABF). The firm owns brands including Allied Bakeries, Westmill Foods, Twinings, Ryvita and The Silver Spoon Company, along with Selfridges and Fortnum & Mason and discount clothing retailer Primark.
Galen Weston derives much of his wealth from the George Weston business in Canada, which includes Loblaw supermarkets and the Shoppers Drug Mart grocery chain.
Strong growth in grocery and a star performance by Primark helped ABF lift its half-year profits by £7M to £463M, the firm reported last month.
ABF announced plans to invest £50M in its four British Sugar beet factories over the next year.
