Market forces should be allowed to decide the outcome of Pfizer’s AstraZeneca bid – without the interference of politicians, according to Premier Foods boss Gavin Darby.

Politicians should avoid meddling in corporate mergers and acquisitions, Darby told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

“I’ve worked for two very big multi nationals in the past,” said the Premier Foods ceo. “I’m a big fan of the open economy. I think it’s not an accident that we have the highest employment rates and the GDP in Europe. Maybe it is because we are the most open economy in Europe.”

Darby was appearing on the programme to promote School Pilot – a intiative launched today to encourage food and drink manufacturers and retailers to visit schools to boost the employability skills of 13-17 year olds.

Meanwhile, AstraZeneca boss Pascal Soirot will give evidence to the House of Commons Science Committee today (May 14), in a bid to persude Members of Parliament (MPs) that a takeover of his firm by Pfizer would not be in the national interest.

Yesterday (May 13) Pfizer head and research and development Mikael Dosten told MPs the takeover would lead to “amuch better outcome for patients”.
