Lord David Sainsbury
Former minister for science Lord David Sainsbury made the list of the top 100 practising scientists.
He was recognised for his charitable and philanthropic activities, under the ‘policy maker’ category. Sainsbury was the founder of the Gatsby Charitable Foundation and is a champion of high quality technical education and apprenticeships in science.
He was the chairman of supermarket chain Sainsbury from 1992 to 1997. The chain was founded by his great-grandfather John James Sainsbury in 1869.
He is the chancellor of Cambridge University, and an honorary fellow of the Society of Biology, Academy of Medical Sciences, Royal Academy of Engineering and Royal Society.
Lord Sainsbury and family, whose assets are estimated at £590M, up by £70M on the previous year, were also included in a list of the richest people in the food and drink industry.
