Wal-Mart has promoted David Cheesewright to the role of president and ceo of Wal-Mart International, the company’s second largest operating segment.

Cheesewright, who is currently president and ceo of Wal-Mart’s Europe, Middle East and Africa and Canada region, will start the role on February 1 2014.

He joined Wal-Mart in 1999 at Asda, the company’s UK operation, where he held leadership positions in operations, merchandising, logistics, strategy and format development.

Before joining Wal-Mart he held a number of leadership positions at Mars Confectionery.

Cheesewright said he was honoured to lead the company.

‘Committed to investing’

“Our success is dependent on our associates, and I’m committed to investing in them,” he said. “Together, we will find innovative and sustainable ways to serve our customers and provide them with the quality, affordable products they expect from us”

He added that Wal-Mart would continue to invest in new stores and e-commerce growth.

Last month Wal-Mart appointed Doug McMillon as its new president and ceo.

McMillon said Cheesewright was the ideal person to lead the business into its next chapter of long-term growth and to drive change that would improve the world.

“He brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of innovation and governance. With his deep knowledge of the company, our customers, and our purpose, he is the ideal person to steer our next chapter of continued, long-term growth.”
