Former Diageo boss Paul Walsh has been appointed as an additional director of United Spirits.

Walsh stood down as ceo of Diageo in May after 13 years at the helm.

He continues to work as a consultant for the maker of Guinness, Johnnie Walker, Smirnoff and Captain Morgan.

Diageo is the major shareholder in leading Indian spirits company United Spirits, with a shareholding of 25.02%.

In June it was also announced that Walsh will take up the role of chairman at foodservice company the Compass Group on January 1 2014.

Vikram Singh Mehta

Meanwhile, Diageo also appointed Vikram Singh Mehta, chairman of global energy company Shell, as an independent director.

Mehta has been chairman of Shell since 1993. Prior to this he held a number of positions at various oil companies, having started his career with the Indian Administrative Service of the Indian government in 1978.

Meanwhile, earlier this month Diageo announced a new joint venture with creative business investor Independents United to offer up to £15M worth of investment for entrepreneurs looking to break into the spirits sector.
