High-purity Reb D has received self-affirmed Generally Recognised as Safe (GRAS) status, and PureCircle will formally submit its GRAS notification to the US Food and Drug Administration for the agency's additional safety review.
The stevia producer says the clean sweetness of high-purity Reb D will further enable manufacturers to develop naturally sweetened formulations with very low to no calories, particularly in food and drinks with higher sweetness levels, such as carbonated soft drinks.
PureCircle has spent more than a decade developing the product via its breeding programme, which involves in-house and third-party breeding centres across the globe.
PureCircle chief executive Magomet Malsagov says: "PureCircle's Reb D introduction will unlock new reduced and zero calorie food and beverage solutions.
"Over the past two years, we have dramatically accelerated the pace of new stevia solutions to the global market."
