Tesco’s second appearance in our list of the most popular articles in November featured its demand for chicken legs in China.
A Tesco manager in Shanghai told environment secretary Owen Paterson during a visit to his store that chicken legs are a delicacy in the country. Starved of supplies, the retailer had to import chicken legs from Brazil to meet demand.
Paterson wrote in his diary: “What is a wasted by-product of the poultry industry in the UK can be sold here, adding value.”
Paterson told the store manager about a Northern Irish poultry producer which produces 9M chicken feet a week and has to pay to dispose of them. He introduced the two parties to each other so that they could reach an export deal.
