Supermarketpower
Power in the UK food and drink industry is shifting from the retailers to the manufacturers, for the first time in 30 years, according to a leading city analyst.
Dave McCarthy of Investec told FoodManufacture.co.uk that the UK food retail sector was now in “structural decline”.
He predicted that the profitability which it had enjoyed during recent years would not last for the foreseeable future.
"For suppliers [manufacturers], this is a new industry to the one of the past 30 years. Their customers are less profitable and therefore less powerful."
