New scorecard calculates carbon footprint of cans

Metal packaging association Empac has launched an interactive scorecard that calculates the carbon footprint of metal cans and other products.

The scorecard has been designed to provide consistent answers to questions raised by customers, retailers and regulators regarding the environmental impact of metal packaging, and tracks carbon emissions from the mining of raw materials through to manufacture and delivery to customers.

Designed to provide estimates of carbon dioxide levels for different cans with different recycling rates, weights and transport distances, the scorecard will be updated regularly as progress is made to further minimise emissions.

Empac chief executive Gordon Shade said​: “The scorecard is part of our commitment to address regulators’ requirements by providing fact-based and unambiguous information on our industry."

Metal had the best recycling and recovery rates of all packaging materials, he claimed: “Metal packaging has strong sustainability credentials and we are constantly looking at how we can improve this position and reduce the carbon footprint of metal cans even further.”

The data collection and software development for the interactive tool was undertaken by Dutch research body TNO.

Companies that buy cans in Europe can access the scorecard through their can supplier (if it is a member of Empac).
