Light as a hot-fillable bottle
Weighing less than 19g for 0.5l, the new Skyward (pictured, above right) and Curvy (above, left) polyethylene terephthalate (PET) models have beaten the world record for the lightweighting of hot-fillable PET bottles, according to their creator: beverage packaging company Sidel.
Sidel says its two 0.5l bottles have undergone a revolution in terms of weight and design.
Bottle lightweighting has been made possible by the Sidel packaging and tooling centre's redesign of the bottles' neck, body and base.
The 28mm amorphous neck has been made lighter and accepts a standard cap for carbonated soft drinks. The base has also been revised, making it stiffer while using fewer raw materials.
The new geometric structure of the bottle body compensates for deformations of the shape that are caused by vacuum absorption after cooling.
