Consumers are increasingly expecting sustainable packaging for products as a matter of course, according to the latest report from Datamonitor.

Sustainable Packaging Trends: Consumer Perspectives and Product Opportunities highlighted results from a consumer survey showing 39% of consumers felt packaging design had a medium to high level of influence over their product choice.
However, just 9% said packaging exerted a high level of influence on their purchases. Out of 15 countries surveyed, the UK had the greatest proportion of survey respondents showing high levels of concern about the packaging of products in the household goods market.
Significantly, 40% of UK respondents said they seek alternative products if they believe their first choice to be packaged excessively.
Commenting on the results of the research, Datamonitor urged firms to keep evaluating their packaging to align themselves with emerging consumer concerns.
It added: “Updating packaging can also be a more credible way to make cost savings than methods such as ‘package shrink’ or more accurately ‘portion shrink’, where a smaller amount of the product is sold at the same price.”
