To meet the increased demand generated by the expansion of the South African foodservice market, McCain has added three new packing lines to one of its key plants in South Africa.

Products produced at the potato processing site at Delmas include French Fries, Potato Wedges and batter fries. The plant supplies big-name customers in South Africa, such as McDonalds, Mug 'n' Bean, Ocean Basket and the Spur Group.

The three new lines are designed to work together, each one based around an Ishida R-Series multihead weigher. The weighers are integrated into an infeed system that can make use of just one of them when the demand is low, or all three when demand is high.

The new weighers offer significant reductions in product giveaway, owing to the speed at which they can calculate and check weigh combinations. Each one delivers 500g plastic bags of fries at 90 bags a minute.

Increased calculation speed adds to efficiency as the weigher rarely finds it necessary to dump a load for being under- or overweight. Operator intervention is kept to a minimum by an automatic feed control system and the self-tuning vibratory system that automatically adjusts vibration amplitude to optimise product flow.
