The British Nutrition Foundation has appointed an honorary president at its annual general meeting.Professor Derek Burke​ was vice-chancellor of the University of East Anglia 1987-1995 and has been active on various boards and committees focusing on science, engineering and technology.

Burke has been a specialist adviser to the House of Commons Select Committee on Science and Technology since 1995. From 1988 to 1997 he was also chairman of the Advisory Committee on Novel Foods and Processes, and is currently a member of the Committee on Ethics of Genetic Modification and Food Use.

Burke also participated in the UK government’s ‘Technology Foresight’, an exercise to decide how science could best contribute to the UK’s economic competitiveness.
