Spotting risks in the food chain is a daily challenge faced by growers, importers, producers and retailers. It is a task made all the more difficult by having to wade through endless reports and other information sources just to find the bits that might apply to you. FC24, a new database compiled and managed by Central Science Laboratory (CSL), is set to change all that.
FC24 is a compilation of EU legislation relating to food contaminants and residues, including EU rapid alerts. It gives 24/7 on-line access to up-to-date information on environmental contaminants, colours and dyes, major food preservatives and additives, and pesticide residues.
It is linked to CSL's existing databases on mycotoxins, and veterinary drug and pesticide minimum risk levels (MRLs).
The database allows users to select a commodity or contaminant they are interested in, run a search, and get up-to-date regulatory information within minutes. It also highlights any problems with that commodity or contaminant reported from across the EU.
To save users time, CSL offers a service whereby clients can nominate a number of commodities, contaminants and/or countries, then FC24 e-mails them when there is a new alert.
