Schoolchildren are the target for the latest better-for-you cookie from BakeMark UK. Its soft-bake Apricot and Raisin Cookie is free from artificial flavours and colours, low in sodium and contains more than 20% fruit offering caterers a means of indulging youngsters' snacking habits with a tasty but better-for-you option.

As its name suggests, the cookie contains apricots - a valuable source of the disease-preventing antioxidant beta carotene, iron and fibre and is packed with raisins, which contain vitamins and minerals such as iron and calcium. BakeMark has successfully reduced the product's saturated fat content by 53%, compared to a typical milk chocolate cookie. With 23% fewer calories and 75% more fibre than regular recipes, Apricot and Raisin Cookies are a healthier alternative to traditional sweet treats. The product also has a reduced sodium content, in line with the Food Standards Agency's target for cakes.

Peter Julian, BakeMark UK's head of foodservice, said: "As much as parents would like their children not to snack between meals, it is difficult to control what they eat during school hours.

"And our research confirms that children would be happy to eat healthier treats, provided they taste good. The Apricot and Raisin Cookie is an excellent solution. The product can help school caterers widen their selection of healthier options, without compromising on the 'treat factor'."
