ABF Ingredients becomes the first US domestic manufacturer of milk protein isolates this month [September 2006] as it brings new capacity on stream at its Protient Norfolk, Nebraska plant.

The investment forms part of the company's expansion of its yeast extracts and proteins manufacturing facilities in Europe and North America, with totals of more than $15M in 2006.

In Europe an expansion in Ohly Hamburg will increase capacity in high nucleotide baker's yeast extracts and enhance capacity in yeast cell wall extracted glucan, thereby improving the site's total yeast extracts capability.

In the US, Provesta Flavor Ingredients is expanding its Torula yeast extracts at its Boyceville Wisconsin site, which will also include the manufacture of high nucleotide products. Both expansions become fully operational in 2007.

Milk protein isolates are used in foods such as nutritional bars and sports products. They are a valuable source of slow digestible protein and can be used for muscle damage recovery during or after exercise.
