High blood pressure is the number one health concern among UK adults, according to research from Mintel commissioned as part of a major new study into functional foods.
Mintel's full report will not be published until March, but initial findings suggest a healthy future for businesses in the functional ingredients and foods arena, said consumer analyst Julie Sloan.
"Only a third of the 2,000 adults we questioned said they never bought functional foods, which is extremely encouraging for manufacturers. There is also evidence that people are concerned about health problems at an earlier age, with men in their thirties starting to worry about heart disease in particular."
The survey results were also encouraging for companies working in the cosmeceuticals arena, with 25-34-year olds in particular concerned about the relationship between diet and skincare, she added.
But, while consumers are becoming more familiar with phrases like omega-3, friendly bacteria and plant sterols, companies still need to focus on general wellbeing.
