More than four out of five (83%) respondents to the latest Food Manufacture on-line poll believe that manufacturers and retailers should be obliged to build formal notice periods into contracts.

The poll was held in the wake of mass redundancies at Ferndale Foods after bosses were given just 12 weeks’ notice of Asda’s plan to switch a major contract to another supplier.

The result was a surprise to legal firms, which said that formal written contracts of any description were still unusual in the industry. Richard Matthews at Eversheds, said: “There is less commitment to paper in the food industry than in any other that I cover.”
