BestPump has commissioned an automated butter block handling system at Fox's Biscuits in Batley, West Yorkshire.

The system can load 13 x 25kg blocks, at 5°C, on to a conveyor and then into a chute feeding the auger chamber of a butter handling machine, made by BestPump's partner, Polar Process. The chute can accept four further butter blocks, so up to 425kg can be loaded.

Within the auger chamber twin 9in polished stainless steel flighted augers break down the blocks and convey them, via a rectangular flanged inlet, to a 4in circumferential piston, positive displacement pump. This has an operating pressure of up to 30 bar and a running speed of 56rpm. It can handle 6000kg/h of butter.

From the pump the butter is conveyed 150ft, through a 4in jacketed stainless steel pipe system, to one of five discharge points in the factory's recipe mixing area. Each discharge point has automatic valves which allow the butter to be 'on tap' and accurately weighed.
