Tesco has installed a new external walling and roofing system at its Doncaster distribution centre.
Cold store and firewall contractors, ISD, sent engineers and designers to study the technique in Belgium, where the external walling process is more generally used. ISD then erected the mammoth 5,700m2walling on to the external steelwork of the building.
The company had to use a high-grade steel as the interior freezer operates at -26°C, but the system was still cost effective. ISD md, Tony Wall, explains: "On other projects, the walling is normally erected internally with separate, external cladding, but this innovative method reduces a standard 12-16 week project by 4-5 weeks."
The exterior walling was attached to the framework with stainless steel joggle clips complete with rods. These were positioned through calculations using wind-loading, ambient temperatures and deflection of the structure.
