Sainsbury plans to roll out an online performance management tool to 200 suppliers by the year end in a bid to improve standards.
The tool, developed by the online exchange GNX, enables users to set targets for anything from accurate case labelling to the delivery of advanced shipment notes and then record and monitor progress via a secure website.
The GNX vice-president Bharat Popat said that the tool also facilitated project management by keeping all parties to a strict timetable and storing all data in one place. "Suppliers are very keen on this because they can use it to hold Sainsbury to account," he said. "You can't argue with hard facts or say you didn't know you were supposed to do something because it's all there on the record."
Separately, all own-label products for Sainsbury are now developed using GNX's collaborative development tool, which manages the development cycle on a similar web-based system. Sainsbury claimed the tool could slash time to market by a third.
