The British Frozen Food Federation (BFFF) is developing a code of practice to address the "contentious issue" of on-line auctions, said its president Howard McEvoy at its annual lunch.

Without a code, he said, the use of e-auctions was leading to unacceptable practices by retailers and catering company buyers. Practices have included bidders being called half-way through the bidding process and the winners of auctions not getting the business.

"It is necessary for a code of practice to be brought into play if the system is ever going to be fair and equitable to the buyers and sellers involved," said the BFFF.

In the absence of consensus among other parts of the food sector, the BFFF said that it would "go it alone" to develop a code of practice.
