Cains Brewery of Liverpool is expanding with a contract to supply canned IPA to Makro's 33 cash-and-carries in the UK. The deal follows hard on the heels of another to supply Cains Mild to 230 Asda stores throughout the UK.

Asda in the northwest had previously stocked some Cains beers, including Mild, Bitter and Formidable Ale.

Sudarghara Dusanj, joint md of Cains with his brother Ajmail, said that the new Asda deal would reinforce the value of regional brewers and the image of Liverpool.

Cains, which has recently introduced new can designs as part of a rebranding exercise, should be able to meet demand from its existing plant. "We have quite a lot of capacity," said Sudarghara Dusanj. The brewer is working on two shifts with 24-hour a day filtering.

The Dusanj brothers bought Robert Cain Brewery and 10 pubs in Liverpool from the Danish Brewery Group in 2002. It has gone on to win awards from the Campaign for Real Ale, the Brewing Industry International awards body and in the Tesco Beer Challenge.
