Warburtons, the UK's largest independent baker, has begun work on a "super bakery" in Wakefield.

Due for completion in 10 months' time, the £60m bakery is being built on a 1.2ha site at Tuscany Park, alongside the company's existing site at Westgate End, and will supply Warburtons' Yorkshire customers.

A capacity for 2m loaves and 500,000 packets of rolls a week will quadruple the baker's bread production in Yorkshire.

The factory will employ more than 200 people and there will also be a visitor centre telling the story of bread making, along with a picnic area.

Company chairman Jonathan Warburton said: "This is a massive investment for our company and reinforces our commitment to Yorkshire. The new bakery will be the biggest in our network and should put Yorkshire on the map for baking excellence."

The new development will take the number of bakeries owned by the company to 12. However, its Wednesbury bakery is undergoing reconstruction after a fire in January this year. It should be back in full production by January 2005.
