Farmers and vets are being alerted to a new illness in cattle which strikes the nervous system.
The UK Zoonoses Group, set up in the wake of BSE to monitor animal diseases which may be transmitted to humans, said 21 incidents of the yet unclassified disease, had been reported.
The chief veterinary office has called for an urgent report.
Logistics company Exel has opened the first of three test centres to trial radio frequency identification (RFID) systems.
The company said it would work with customers at the centre in Pennsylvania to look at tag positioning, pallet configuration, material handling and depot layout. It would also assess accuracy, security and affordability of RFID technology.
Exel plans to open a further two centres in Europe and Asia.
