Greencore cuts errors with real-time data collection

The own-label supplier wanted to quickly and accurately record finished product manufacture information, best before and rotation dates and finished stock locations, but its existing manual processes were prone to error. Previously, workers had to fill in pallet tickets manually and then take them to an office 50m away where another person entered the information into the enterprise resource planning (ERP) system.

To improve the process and reduce the amount of human and keyboard errors that were arising the company opted for Indigo Software's Syncro data capture solution. This uses barcodes and data collection hardware to capture the key information which is integrated with the GEAC System 21 ERP system, thus enabling real-time transfer of data.

The Synchro system was already being used at Greencore Sandwiches' Worksop and Park Royal sites for a slightly different application, so was felt to be an appropriate choice, says Greencore IT manager Graham Manning.

"We now have highly accurate, up-to-date information which has enabled us to make product to a sales order rather than for stock, resulting in far less wastage and a reduction in the amount of material that we need to store," says Manning. Greencore plans to roll out Synchro at its other UK sites.
