Kids get the dairy factor

Robert Wiseman Dairies and Tetrapak joined the Manchester-based Manufacturing Institute to set teenagers from the north west a dairy-themed challenge for the final of the Manufacturing Enterprise Challenge competition.

A total of 14 teams of 14- to 15-year-olds battled for the Make It champion's crown, with pupils from Archbishop Blanch Church of England High School taking the trophy. Competitors had to form a dairy processing firm for a day and design, package and cost their own product, which they then had to present to business investors.

The Manufacturing Institute's Make It campaign was designed to attract young people to manufacturing and engineering roles. A total of 500 young people and 100 teachers took part.

"The recession is making young people think differently about future careers and many are now considering opportunities in manufacturing and engineering," said Make It Campaigner Nicola-Eagleton-Crowther.
