Manufacturers missing out on £10bn of energy savings
The latest findings from a survey for Brammer, supplier of maintenance, repair and overhaul products, suggest that manufacturing companies across Europe are failing to capitalise on more than £10bn of potential energy savings at their plants.
The 2008 Brammer Energy Survey found that although manufacturers are acutely aware of the importance of making energy savings, few are exploiting or understand the full potential savings that they could make. In particular, the survey indicates that considerable energy savings from mechanical power transmission products such as motors, bearings and belts are being overlooked.
In the survey of over 330 manufacturing companies across 10 countries in Europe, Brammer found that only 6% believed they had already made all the savings possible. Most (60%) were in the process of planning or implementing energy savings, but, crucially, very few were including power transmission purchases in these plans.
Ian Ritchie, md of Brammer, explained: "Increasing energy saving has three key outcomes: reduced cost to the plant, increase in competitiveness and reduced carbon emissions from fuel consumption. Clearly managers in manufacturing plants recognise their responsibility and believe they are working hard towards this, but our findings indicate that there is a great deal more that they could do."
