Fairtrade gingers up spices
The Organic Herb Trading Company has developed a new source of Fairtrade-certified spices in India to provide high quality spices from 2,000 small farmers across three states of southern India.
The Fairtrade Mark is an independent scheme that guarantees that disadvantaged producers in the developing world are getting a better deal. Fairtrade farmers receive a minimum price that covers the cost of sustainable production and an extra premium that is invested in social or economic development projects, such as clean-water pipes, schools or housing.
Founder of The Organic Herb Trading Company, Mike Brook, said: "The Organic Herb Trading Company has always been at the forefront of the organic 'gold standard'. "We are delighted to offer the fruits of a four-year co-operation with our Indian spice producers which ticks all the boxes - organic, bio-dynamic, supporting social development, and incorporating Fairtrade."
