Fast track to salad leaf safety
At the UK's Defence Science and Research Laboratory, a rapid and accurate pathogen detection system for leaf salad and fresh vegetables system has been developed for food processors. Based on innovative Ministry of Defence technology, It gives the all-clear for microbiological safety in under 18 hours compared to the three to six days it used to take previously.
It thus allows products to be certified as pathogen-free and so reach retailers and consumers in the quickest possible time.
The patented technology has been commercialised by Alaska Food Diagnostics whose research and development scientists are working with leading UK suppliers of bagged leaf salad and fresh vegetable produce to ensure salad safety.
Using the new fastrAK rapid microbiology testing system, the presence of E. coli can be detected within 10 hours.
This allows samples taken by growers in the morning to be confidently released the next day with known quality control results.
