Cornish sardines could be at the forefront of Britons' rediscovery of the delights of healthy oily fish caught off the British Isles, if Devon company Hannaford's has its way. These fish, which are packed full of nutrients such as omega-3, calcium, protein and iron, are now available nationally through Nisa stores, independent retailers and online.

"Sardines are one of the most versatile and nutritious ingredients that we work with and we have created a simple recipe to enhance the naturally strong flavour of the fish," says the company's boss Ali Hannaford. "We source all our sardines from Cornwall and present them filleted and in an easy-to-cook format with garlic and herb farmhouse butter. This simplicity captures the delicious flavours."

She adds: "We are incredibly lucky at Hannaford's to be surrounded by some of Britain's best coastlines and agricultural land, and this has played a big part in our continued success. We work closely with our local suppliers and producers to bring a true taste of the west country to our recipes."
