Industry should devise own transport solutions
The industry should stop relying on government for answers to eco-friendly distribution and focus on devising its own solutions, delegates at logistics consultancy Scala's annual debate heard.
Speaking at the event, at Wroxall Abbey, Warwickshire, Trevor Ashworth, director of retail logistics at the Co-operative Group, recognised government had a track record of "getting it wrong" on commercial transport issues. "Look at the biofuels initiative, which is now subject to the biggest question mark."
Consequently, he said: "It's not going to be government that comes up with solutions to these things, nor should it be. Eventually it will be the consumer and retailer that's going to drive things forward."
He also questioned whether the industry was creating a confusing picture for MPs by lobbying on too many different issues.
