Boost for diabetics
Groundbreaking functional foods that can induce insulin production in diabetics and pre-diabetics could hit the UK early next year.
DSM Food Specialties, which has developed a dairy peptide called InsuVital that partially restores insulin function, said it could be use in water, juices, cereal bars and dairy products.
Erik Lommerde, DSM business manager, metabolic syndrome and diabetes, said: "InsuVital is likely to be launched in an application in the UK in early 2009."
DSM was also confident that claims about InsuVital's ability to reduce glucose peaks after meals would be approved under the EU Nutrition and Health Claims Regulation, added Lommerde.
"Now that we have tackled technical issues such as flavour masking, the potential is huge. Diabetes is a massive global problem, and it's getting bigger because obesity levels are rising," he said. "We're talking about something that can help people keep off oral medication for longer and help to control blood sugar."
