Leatherhead Food International is keen to expand its research programme on probiotics and prebiotics to include work on bacteria in the mouth.

To date, most research on bacteria has focused on the large intestine, said forum liaison officer Dr Evangelia Komitopoulou, who is currently involved in an EU project on bacteriophage therapy as an alternative to antibiotics.

New research will explore the nature of oral microflora, the most effective ways of administering probiotics and optimimum dosages for oral health, she said.

"Can probiotics be used to control the imbalance in oral microflora causing oral malodour [bad breath], and if so, under what conditions?"
