Survey aims to wrap up supply chain waste
The Food and Drink Federation (FDF) is conducting an in-depth survey of processors, retailers and stakeholder groups to help crack down on major sources of food waste in the supply chain.
"Our waste infrastructure working group is bringing together all those who can influence this agenda," said Callton Young, FDF director of sustainability and competitiveness. He said the project, which involved the Environment Agency and the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP), aimed to address several areas. "We want to know where waste is arising and existing anaerobic and composting capacity. We have asked the National Industrial Symbiosis Programme to set up capacity and waste databases on a regional basis [to pinpoint facilities]." The FDF hopes to publish the survey's results later this year. The British Retail Consortium has asked to collaborate on the project.
Efficiently diverting waste to anaerobic digestion plants would be a major aim of the work. The government has released £10M in capital grants to help boost anaerobic digestion capacity by 450,000t by 2010.
Young was speaking at the launch of WRAP's 'The Food We Waste' report in London, which revealed that UK households scrap a third of the food they buy.
