Fortune lost in tips
The food industry is being urged to re-think how it deals with waste amid claims that it throws away millions of pounds.
More sustainable solutions to the 30Mt of food and packaging disposed of every year should be considered, including green energy, said law firm Eversheds, business advisor Deloitte and financial services group Barclays.
Barclays said it would provide funding for sustainable, revenue generating projects that would "literally turn waste into a reliable cash stream". It had already financed 2,500MW of renewable generating capacity, creating enough electricity to power 1.4M homes. Meanwhile, business advisory firm Deloitte said it had seen significant and increasing interest from both small companies and major plcs in waste opportunities in the food sector.
