The penetration of third-party logistics providers (3PLs) in food and drink dropped significantly last year as retailers took greater control over their supply chains, according to a new report from grocery think tank IGD.

The 3PL share of retail grocery transport volumes dropped from 50% in 2005 to 45% in 2006, while their share of depot space dropped from 40% to 28% over the same period. These were the lowest levels in the last 10 years.
