The European Commission (EC) is expected to drop proceedings against the UK for failing to enforce EU food hygiene rules in dairies, said industry body Dairy UK. The case will be discussed at a meeting in Brussels on March 23.

The EC launched proceedings against the UK after finding hygiene levels were below standard at Bowland Dairy Products in Lancashire, which had already been inspected by the Food Standards Agency.

The dairy was closed down and the EC's Food and Veterinary Office (FVO) carried out an inspection of UK dairies in November last year.
