Mandatory fortification of flour and bread with folic acid to increase uptake of the B vitamin in pregnant women is just one of four options being put forward by government, following scientific advice.

Alternatives include stepping up efforts to encourage young women to take supplements and eat folate-rich food and urging industry to voluntarily fortify.

The Federation of Bakers welcomed the opening of a 13-week consultation, but said it was important to balance mandatory and voluntary regimes.
