Truck dates save miles

The UK arm of ECR, the European supply chain initiative, has announced its 2007 programme to boost industry efficiency. It will develop guidance on date coding on packaging, a guide to retail-ready packaging, and a survey on availability of new product introductions.

Other priorities include driving up awareness of the benefits of collaborative distribution, said Chris Tyas, ECR UK co-chair and Nestlé UK supply chain and systems director. "We have already reduced food miles by 5M-7M a year through truck 'speed dating' events." These had helped companies consolidate loads, said Tyas. "We are getting third-party logistics firms and programming and routing specialists involved, but it's really about manufacturers and retailers sitting down together and working out how to take vehicles off the road."
